White Sands National Monument Visitor Center
Within a 1938 historic adobe, visitors will be introduced to the rich geology and natural and cultural history stories of the world's largest gypsum dune field that has been designated a National Monument. In the Visitor Center welcome area visitors will be greeted by a
life-size gypsum pedestal. This dimensional dune-cut-away invites
visitors to have an up-close look at geology cross beds, the water
table, animal burrows and root systems. A touchable relief map nearby
will provide visitors with an immediate visual message about the
monument's dramatic geology. In the exhibit gallery, an Aeolian landscape machine will offer
visitors a chance to move a fan and change the direction of dune
formations to better understand how wind forms the dunes. Visitors
will also discover how selenite crystals are formed at nearby Lake
Lucero and learn about the importance of the Alkali Flat. At the
Nature of Gypsum exhibit visitors can compare gypsum sand with
quartzite sand and test their knowledge as they attempt to match
gypsum with its various commercial uses.
