Southeast Alaska Discovery Center
For this visitor center, Donald Sibbett designed exhibit programs that interpret the natural and cultural resources of Southeast Alaska and the Tongass National Forest. The museum was designed as a series of walk-through environments that present our National Forests as a Land of Many Uses.In the main entry, three totem poles greet visitors. In the distance, a re-creation of a temperate rain forest gurgles with the sounds of a running stream and the patter of a rainstorm. Beyond the forest, visitors walk through a cave covered with petroglyphs and emerge on the shore of an ancient fishing village. A hand-hewn canoe rests on the rocks. A native dwelling is filled with displays of regional costumes, clothing and food items.Further on, large photo murals and interactive exhibits highlight the ecosystems of Southeast Alaska while a symphony of nature sounds plays softly in the background. Next, visitors move on to a room loaded with modern machinery, instruments and tools that illustrate the industries and natural resources of the region. In the old lodge on the lower level of the center, visitors can discover the state's other regions or meet with a travel representative to plan a journey.
