Hagerman Fossil Beds Visitor Center
Interpreting the Great Basin - a region that includes Nevada, Utah, Oregon and California - this new visitor center will highlight the geologic formation of this unique and pristine landscape.Visitors approaching the new center will discover thematic words embedded in the paving as they make their way to an outdoor plaza. Here, wayside exhibits shall feature touchable models relating to the themes of water and geology. Visitors will be able to peer through viewing scopes that frame elements of interest and relax on the
built-in seating while enjoying the amazing views.Indoors, preliminary design concepts include a wall-sized photo mural of the Great Basin that introduces visitors to the beauty and diversity of the park. A touchable, table-mounted topographic map will illustrate the Basin's far-reaching boundaries and short videos will share the view from the 13,063-foot summit of Wheeler Peak, including pictures of the otherworldly Lehman Caves.Interpretive exhibits will highlight the themes of natural history, cultural history and resource management. As they enter each exhibit area, visitors will activate ambient sound designs while light patterns dance on the floors and walls setting the scene for discovery-based learning. Visitors will appreciate the diversity of life and history above the treeline, in the lakes and forests and at the desert's edge as they encounter local plants, specimens and small touchable models.
