Clarks Hill Visitor Center
The Sibbett Group is collaborating with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to design a visitor center that showcases the natural history and cultural heritage along the Savannah River.Entering the visitor center, guests cool down as they pass between two walls filled with bubbling water. Directly ahead is a gigantic aquarium thriving with local fish and plant life. Here, visitors can look through a fish–eye lens, view a collection of antique fishing lures and play with an interactive puzzle to learn about fish anatomy. A small boat overhead, adrift in a school of fish, humorously depicts a familiar scene as a fisherman dangles an anxious line over the side, about to hook a huge bass.At the exhibits, visitors discover interactives, photos and timelines that share the histories of both the dam that created J. Strom Thurmond Lake and life along the Savannah River. At the Lake Resources exhibit, visitors encounter sights, sounds and scents that highlight the many recreational opportunities offered by the lake and its surroundings. Nearby, a glassed–in viewing area invites visitors to use binoculars to spot the myriad birds and wildlife that live at the water’s edge. Visitors can activate a collection of birdcalls with buttons on a series of birdhouses hanging nearby.Visitors hungry for more information can take advantage of the resource center and it’s helpful staff to answer questions about their visit to J. Strom Thurmond Lake.
