Begich, Boggs Visitor Center
The Sibbett Group is designing a new center that explores the climate, geography, people, and wildlife of the Chugach National Forest and Prince William Sound in Alaska.Visitors pass by a vibrant mural to enter the Chugach National Forest Experience and explore three distinct Chugach environments. Moving light patterns, the sounds of a rushing stream, and cool blasts of air excite the senses as visitors take a tour of the Chugach with video guides, explore full-size open dioramas, or hop in a kayak for a paddle on Prince William Sound. The centerpiece of the gallery is a round structure offering visitors an engaging encounter with Alaskans and Their Stories. The warmly lit wood-ribbed room invites visitors to enjoy a round of fireside video storytelling or learn about close-call accounts of Alaskans living on the frontier. At The Wild Side, visitors come face-to-face with a moose and her calf, find out what it's like to have eagle eyes and snuggle up with a gigantic ice worm.In The Weather Lab, visitors use Weather Trylons and Spotting Scopes to make informed predictions. Engaging graphic panels illustrate the formation and retreat of glaciers as they react to climate changes. Finally, Avalanche Alert communicates vital information about the factors and risks associated with traveling in avalanche-prone areas.
