The Barona Cultural Center and Museum
The Sibbett Group has designed a museum which celebrates the culture and traditions of the Barona Band of Mission Indians in Lakeside, California. The museum combines ancient artifacts, re-created natural environments and dynamic interpretive graphics to tell the story of the Barona Indians.Four themed areas with engaging activities provide visitors with opportunities to learn about ancestral traditions and the current movement to recapture the rich culture. In the main exhibit entrance, a towering rock pinnacle with a scattering of plant and animal models, emphasize the importance of nature and the role it played in the survival of this historic tribe. Adjacent to this area, the Talking Wall features a curved floor-to-ceiling glass display case filled with ancient tribal artifacts. Throughout the museum storyteller graphics communicate tales of living with the land, emphasized by an audio program of Kumeyaay words. A trio of science interactives illustrates the innovations explored by the tribe long ago. Especially for children, Living with the Land invites kids to re-enact life as it was long ago, donning clothing and using tools in a setting featuring an authentic dwelling. To gain knowledge about current tribal activities and genealogies, visitors can spend time in Today and the Future, and adding their own recollections of the past to an ever-expanding database of tribal history.
